Are you creative, passionate about social media, and interested in using your social media skills and building your resume? Are you committed to anti-racism and interested in working with a mission-driven organization dedicated to being on the leading edge of holistic public defense? Come and work with me, Special Projects Manager at the Public Defender Service for the District of Columbia (PDS), and assist me in implementing a social media campaign designed to expand PDS’s social media presence, engagement, and reach. Help me take this organization’s social media to the next level!
This position is flexible, Monday to Thursday, and averages 12-15 hours per week. The internship’s duration can be one semester or more, depending on the candidate. The Social Media Intern position reports to PDS’s Special Projects Manager (SPM), responsible for PDS’s social media, website, annual report, photography, videos, and other priorities.

Position Description:
The Social Media Intern will support the SPM to develop and implement outreach and promotional campaigns to boost brand engagement and increase reach and presence. The duties and responsibilities of a Social Media Intern include:
- Assisting with the design and execution of social media campaigns
- Helping to create weekly and monthly editorial calendars to promote PDS on various social media platforms
- Assisting with the development of an organizational social media strategy aligned with agency mission of zealous representation of individuals accused of crimes and commitment to anti-racism
- Creating and identifying anti-racist and culturally relevant draft content such as posts, blogs, images, photos, and infographics for social media
- Assisting with tracking social media engagement to identify high-performing ideas and campaigns for scalability
- Supporting SPM at live and virtual events
- Performing social media marketing research
- Assisting on campaign strategy
- Brainstorming and researching ideas for original content
- Creating compelling graphics to share across social channels
- Writing social media captions and unique slogans that speak to PDS’s target audience and follow PDS’s social media strategy
- Helping to photograph the people, office culture, and work of the organization
- Helping to create and edit short-form videos
- Assisting with the development of new strategies for increasing engagement
- Assisting with photo/video content shoots
- Helping to ensure the brand message is consistent

In addition to the essential functions listed above, this position also requires the intern to be able to do the following:
- Constantly communicate fluently in oral and written English
- Constantly communicate effectively with PDS staff and outside parties over multiple modalities such as phone, e-mail, video conferencing, facsimile, etc.
- Constantly operate a computer and other office equipment which may require repetitive movements
- Frequently navigate multiple programs both on the PDS network (such as e-mail, calendar, etc.) as well as shared programs with outside networks
- Frequently research, view, read, and comprehend materials related to social media, staff, and other stakeholders
- Frequently navigate office environment to access file cabinets, drawers, office equipment and machinery, etc.
- Frequently perform sedentary office work
- Frequently travel by walking, climbing stairs, utilizing public transportation, and/or driving to different PDS satellite offices, in the community, and throughout legal system related sites such as the D.C. courts and jail
- Frequently write notes, emails, and content
- Rarely lift weights up to 30 pounds (e.g., files, boxes, etc.)

Preferred Qualifications:
The ideal Social Media Intern candidate attends a local undergraduate or graduate program in the Washington D.C. regional area and has diverse educational qualifications and technical skills. These include:
- A passion for social justice and public service
- One or more years of experience in digital/social media (it can be personal experience, but your work must be made available to the SPM for review)
- Impeccable oral and written communication skills
- Excellent internet research skills
- Mastery of the major social media platforms including Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, Twitter, and LinkedIn
- Knowledge of social media analytics software including Facebook Insights, Google Analytics and Twitter Analytics to track audience engagement and campaign performance
- Experience with content management systems, word processor applications, and image/video editing software
